"From Bananas to Buttocks: The Latina Body in Film and Culture" edited by Myra Mendible The chapter "'Hey Killer': The Construction of a Macho Latina, or the Perils and Enticements of Girlfight" might be useful in assessing how Adria Arjona is portrayed, especially when she begins fighting against the men in Blink Twice. Latin Looks: Images of Latinos and Latinas in the U.S. Media by Clara E. Rodriguez The chapter "Stereotyping in Films in General and of the Hispanic in Particular" by Charles Ramírez Berg discusses how there was a trend in sci-fi films in particular where "the ethnic Other is disguised as an extraterrestrial", as seen in films such as Aliens (1986), Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1976), and The Terminator (1984), (Ramírez Berg 118).  In the case of Isabela Merced, she literally gives birth to an alien/human hybrid. As my thoughts further progress, I would really like to see how I can involve this angle into my res...

BLINK TWICE REVIEW

Image
BLINK TWICE REVIEW I thought that this was a well made film for a first time director, but a smarter script could have allowed it to be much more effective. Setting aside my qualms about the film overall, I want to jump straight into my analysis of two Latina characters, Sarah and "Badass Maid". (SPOILERS BELOW) We were first introduced to Sarah, portrayed by the talented Adria Arjona (32, Puerto Rican). In her first scene, billionaire Slater King is introducing her to Frida the cocktail waitress. Sarah looks at her smugly and gives her a passive compliment. We later learn that she only came with Cody because she was interested in Slater King, thus why she was so passive to Frida. This contributes to the stereotype of a sexy Latina women using other men to get what she wants. This fiery persona turns towards tropicalist tropes when she ...

11/7/14 UPDATE

11/7/24 For this project I am planning on comparing and analyzing four different films and actors: Alien Romulus (Isabela Merced), and potentially Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (Michael Garza), X (Jenna Ortega), and Blink Twice (María Elena Olivares and Adria Arjona). I would prefer to soon find an older horror film with a Latino character, but it has been hard to come across.  I am set on using Alien: Romulus  ( SPOILER ) because of how the use of out of wedlock pregnancy seen in Isabela Merced's character harms both her and those around her. It led to the popular and comical Letterboxd review that stated  "The one latina in the entire movie managed to get pregnant in space". I am in the process of viewing and analyzing the 2024 thriller "Blink Twice". The film is about two cocktail waitresses who are invited to a billionaire's private island and discover that unsettling things are taking place behind closed doors. I was drawn to this film because o...
